This coming Sunday, June 21st at 1:00 PM, we will have a special opportunity to review the life and times of Jerry Abraham Moore, vice president of everything and human rights campaigner throughout his life.

Jerry Moore Who died peacefully at 92, on May 22nd is a true original. He was the vice president of numerous organizations and contributed greatly to the life of the Tampa Bay community. His was an amazing life, caught up as he was with some of the leading personalities of his time, and always advocating on issues that mattered for a great many people. The Humanist Society, ACLU, Atheists of Florida, Humanistic Judaism, The International Laurel & Hardy Society, Sierra Club, Equality Florida; all owe him a debt of gratitude.

We stand at the cusp of a new way of thinking about and understanding our world; one which is not bound to the traditions of prosaic beliefs and archaic institutions. American Humanism is a consistent advocate for a naturalistic approach to the problems of human life.

To find ourselves in the natural universe and more intimately, in the lives of others of our kind, is to recognize the true source of our individual humanity. From this source flows our ability and responsibility to lead meaningful lives, capable of adding to the greater good and intrinsic beauty of the humanity we share with all.

On a practical level, we aspire to fulfill the human desire to know. We challenge the stifling limitations of religiously restricted thinking. At every meeting we examine issues of ethics, science, philosophy, politics, history, art, or some other aspect of human knowledge and life that help us become the articulate, informed advocates for the greater good of humanity we desire to be.

It is not just for Humanists to learn such things, but for all fully engaged citizens who want a better world for themselves and all the future citizens who will inherit our world. And, having acquired this understanding, it becomes our ethical responsibility to actively create human well being.
Being "good" is not a passive condition.

Why are we Moral? Darwin Day 2020 Event

As never before, our society is in the grip of a moral crises.
Because morality is an artifact of human culture, it is continuously modified by the internal and external experiences of the society that shaped it. Thus, it can never be said to be wholly objective.
Dr. Douglas Mann says that when discussing ethics or morality, we need to refer to the body of Our Evolved Moral Wisdom which describes how evolutionary pressures created our concepts of morality. Morality touches everything that matters about our lives, as a people, and as an individual.

We are very honored to hear our distinguished writer, Dr. Mann, and Ms. Amanda Poppei of the American Ethical Union as they explore this most important issue.
The Tampa Bay Coalition of Reason is presenting Dr Mann as part of its continuing program in bringing distinguished thinkers such as Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Herb Silverman, and many others to our Tampa Bay area.
